The Sixth Congressional District Democratic Committee of Virginia covers all or part of the counties of Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, Clarke, Frederick, Highland, Page, Roanoke, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren. It includes the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, Waynesboro, and Winchester.

Voter Registration and Absentee Voting Information for Nov. 5 General Election

smallmcauliffenorthamherringOn Nov. 5, Virginia voters will cast ballots for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, state delegates, commonwealth’s attorney, sheriff, commissioner of revenue and treasurer.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 15.

The Constitution of Virginia requires that voters be registered to vote in the precinct in which they live in order to be qualified to vote. To be eligible to vote in the general election on Nov. 5, voters must register no later than the close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Any change of address must also be made by Oct. 15.

In-Person Voter Registration is available at all Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices, many Public Library locations and at your local Voter Registrar’s Office during normal hours of operation.

Mail Voter Registration forms are available at U.S. Post Offices, offices of the city or county treasurer, clerks of the Circuit Court, commissioners of the revenue and many public schools and community recreation centers.

Mailed voter registration applications must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, Oct. 15 and should contain a copy of current identification.

Absentee Voting – Tuesday, Oct. 29, is the last day absentee ballot applications may be received by mail. Saturday, Nov. 2, is the last day for absentee voting in person.
Registered voters who want to vote absentee in person by may do so at their local Voter Registrar’s Office from September 20 through November 2. Before visiting your local registrar’s office,  check your registration status or call your registrar’s office (phone numbers available on Virginia voter registration application). If you are not already registered, you will have to wait five days after registration before you can be issued an absentee ballot (exception for military and overseas voters only). If you have a Virginia DMV license or ID card, you can register online.

Please note that a family caregiver voting for the first time in your locality is required to vote in person; this first-time vote in person requirement does not apply to persons with disabilities.

Registered voters who want to vote absentee by mail:

  • Request an Absentee Application from your local registrar.
  • Return the completed form to your local registrar’s office.
  • After the registrar processes your application, you will receive your ballot in the mail.
  • Carefully review the instructions to complete and return your ballot to your local registrar by 7:00 pm on Election Day.
